This is a potent New Moon in a powerful sign that has the capacity to bring a significant shift in our lives and consciousness. As with all New Moons, we have the opportunity to release whatever isn’t serving us, leaving it behind in the dark of the Moon, as we start our new monthly cycle. It is a time when we plant seeds, whether consciously or unconsciously, for the month ahead. The conversations we have, the decisions we make and whatever naturally comes up during this time can have a bearing on what we end up manifesting in the coming weeks leading up to the Full Moon. The universe can take us very literally when we set intentions, so it is important to be mindful of what we wish for! What do we truly long for? What do we dearly wish to release? What needs to pass away now?
During this New Moon we have the Sun, Moon and Mars sitting together in powerful, intense, perceptive, transforming Scorpio, a sign that prompts us to dig deep beneath the surface and eke out whatever lies hidden there. It is quite possible that we will be dealing with issues around trust, death/rebirth, power/powerlessness, loss and abandonment during this time. Scorpio can help us to bring the darkness out into the light, exposing the parts of ourselves that we usually hide from view because we feel shame around them, or because we fear that, by revealing them, we will be judged or rejected somehow. When we have the courage to show ourselves and own the tender parts of us that we might usually keep hidden, they can lose their power over us as the light reveals them for what they are. It is like the monster under the bed – when we shine the torch on it, we realise that it was only a ball of fluff!
With Mars, the warrior planet, being such a big part of this Moon, we are called to be very brave, and to go to places we might usually shy away from. This Moon asks us to confront ourselves and to be extremely honest, stripping away self-deceit and facing the ugly truth, even if it is not what we want to see. Both on a personal level and on the world stage, secrets and lies could be revealed and the darkness could be exposed. Scorpio doesn’t allow us to hide from the truth just because it makes us uncomfortable to see it. We are called to confront our shadows, to look in the ugly mirror and to embrace all of us, warts and all, and as we do so, we regain our power over ourselves. It is so easy to project the disowned parts of ourselves out onto others, including our loved ones and even public figures. It is much harder to admit to ourselves that the things that trigger us are in fact parts of us that we have pushed into the dark recesses of our psyche.
Uranus is a massive part of this Moon, as it is sitting directly opposite the Sun, Moon and Mars. Uranus is the rebel revolutionary planet that can bring sudden shocks that jolt us into greater awareness, curveballs that wake us up to whatever we have been trying to avoid seeing and a shift in perspective that can bring tremendous insight into old patterns and conditioning that has outlived its purpose. Uranus has been such a powerful force during all the Moons in recent times, helping us to take a step back and see ourselves more clearly. This is the planet that brings epiphanies and “Aha” moments, bringing crystal clear understanding as we are somehow able to detach and see things from the bird’s eye perspective.
This Moon also has the potential to bring great clarity and profound realisations, and with all this Scorpio energy this insight could be rather uncomfortable, possibly shocking and incredibly revealing. It could be hard to hide from ourselves during this Moon! With Mars and Uranus sitting opposite one another, there could be some sudden outbursts of anger or eruptions of buried rage or resentment that could take us by surprise. It could be a good time to watch ourselves and consider where any anger we are feeling stems from. Often our anger may be directed towards a certain person or situation, but if we dig deeper and are really honest with ourselves, it actually stems from something else altogether, probably buried in the past. It could be helpful to harness the Uranus energy and take a step back so that we can see, with greater clarity, what is really going on.
Those of us with personal planets or angles around 21°of a sign, especially the fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, will be feeling the liberating, insightful and erratic energy of Uranus most strongly, as well as the impact of this powerful Scorpio Moon. We do have the potential for a big shift, whereby we have a chance to release and liberate ourselves from emotional patterns, habits and issues that could be sabotaging our lives, relationships and happiness and have long since outlived their usefulness. Uranus can bring profound breakthroughs, although sometimes things have to break down first. We have a chance to release ourselves from the past and liberate ourselves from whatever has been holding us prisoner.
Neptune is also playing a part in this Moon, forming a helpful and supportive trine to the Sun, Moon and Mars, which is rather welcome. Neptune brings the spirit of compassion, empathy, unity and unconditional love to the picture. It can help us to hold compassion and forgiveness in our hearts, both towards ourselves and others. This is the planet of oneness and unity, that reminds us that we are all just souls having a human experience, and that we are all connected by an invisible thread. Neptune is the energy we feel at a concert, for instance, when we are all singing the same song in unison, from our hearts, and we experience the goosebumps and inexplicable feeling of togetherness. One Love. When it comes down to it, we are not so different from one another, and are not as separate as it may seem. Neptune can help us to find true acceptance around whatever comes up during this Moon. Combined with Uranus, it can really help to put things into perspective.
The Sabian symbol for this Moon, at 21° Scorpio, is interesting: “Obeying his conscience, a soldier resists orders”, which Dane Rudyar describes as “The readiness to face the results of a refusal to follow the authoritarian patterns of an aggressive society. As a person finds himself involved in activities which are traditional in his particular culture — and in many instances in all societies at this stage of human evolution — he often faces a conflict between his own individual sense of value (his conscience) and the demands of society. The conflict may be most typical in terms of the armed services — thus this symbol. In it we find the individual asserting his own values, though he cannot escape the consequences of his decision. In such a case he has to be quietly ready to face these consequences, whatever the cost. The issue it presents is clear. Society in this situation seems to be all-powerful; yet the individual need not be spiritually bound, even if imprisoned. He still can display INNER FREEDOM and prove himself an ‘individual.’”.
This symbol can be applied both personally and collectively. Sometimes we know, deep inside, what is right for us and, indeed, what is the right thing to do, and may have to make the difficult decision to follow that inner calling, even if it is really hard. This symbol brings to mind the Uranus energy during this Moon, which ultimately calls for us to be true to ourselves and to find the courage to liberate ourselves from the prison of old patterns, expectations, conditioning, unhealthy situations and attachments that are no longer good for us. This Moon calls for us to be very honest with ourselves and to have the courage to transform, transmute and release anything that is preventing us from feeling truly free. Some very strong, deep emotions could come up during this Moon, but they could help us to understand what needs to be transformed and can also bring the impetus to do something about it. Scorpio calls for us to feel all of the feelings, allowing them to guide and inform us, and to truly face ourselves, honour our truth and have the courage to step outside of the comfort zone and allow whatever needs to go to simply fall away. What an opportunity we have here! Phew!
Much Love
